Historical World Fairs: New York - Volume IV (2-DVD Set)

The final part of the Series HISTORICAL WORLD FAIRS: NEW YORK- VOLUME IV provides a detailed account of not only 1939's "World of Tomorrow" fair in New York, but also of New York's 1964 World's Fair. As viewers witness the difference in attractions from one fair to the next, they will gain a sense of how much technology, science, and social climates changed between 1939 and 1964. While the first fair attempted to offer post-depression era people some hope for the future, the latter fair celebrated the tangible progress that had been made in the years leading up to 1964, as well as promising developments for the future (such as putting a man on the moon). With an emphasis on science, the 1964 fair explored two major themes: "Man's Achievement in an Expanding Universe," and "A Millennium in Progress."

American Suburbia: The New Frontier (2-DVD Set)

In an attempt to deal with poor living-conditions and a housing crunch, post-World War II Americans developed the GI Bill (by which servicemen could borrow money to purchase their own homes), and worked to develop attractive living communities outside of major cities. This collection of vintage film clips profiles two small Pennsylvania towns in addition to a few major cities. While "Our Home Town, Doylestown Pennsylvania," and "Our Home Town, Levittown Pennsylvania" promote the benefits of living in small town, "Detroit, City on the Move" advertises the appeal of living in a major metropolis. Similar films include "Rochester- A City of Quality," and "Redwood Estates, A Promotional Film." Finally, "No Time for Ugliness" suggests that the ingredients for creating beautiful cities are careful planning and a close attention to cleanliness.
